Chapter Ten: Lucy

Early the next morning, Kathleen heard someone rummaging down in the kitchen, the clink of dishes as they were being stacked in the dishwasher and then the comforting sound of a percolating coffee pot. She thought it might be Pete but then dismissed the thought. Pete hadn’t washed a dish in years. She decided it must be Sam; she felt relieved that Lily could be taken care of today. Kathleen rolled over and tried to sleep until a gentle knock on her door woke her out of that hazy dream state—half-asleep, half-awake.

“Kat, you’ve got to get out of bed. You’re starting to stink.” Samantha placed a cup of hot coffee on the nightstand next to Kathleen’s bed.

“Where have you been anyway?” Kathleen lifted her head up and dropped it back on the pillow. “And where’s Nonna? I thought I could count on the two of you. I can’t take care of Lily right now. Yesterday wiped me out.”

“I was just gone for one day. I’m back now.” Samantha sat on the bed next to her. In a softer tone, she asked, “So how are you?”

“Just great,” Kathleen answered, scowling at her sister, crawling deeper under the covers.

As Samantha leaned back on the headboard, her hand brushed against a mound of used, crumpled tissues near the pillows. Her brows furrowed together. “Kat, how are you really?”

“I’m just… sad,” Kathleen started, her voice trailing off. She sat up in the bed and reached for a tissue, getting ready to bare her soul to her sister.

“Kat, I finally asked Nonna why she had withdrawn money, and she couldn’t remember. She had no idea what I was talking about. Do you know why she needed the money?”

“You’ve seen Nonna? Where has she been?”

“I spoke to her on the phone. And that took some work. She’s hard to track down lately,” Samantha said, eyebrows furrowed in worry. “So do you have any idea why she needed the money?”

Kathleen looked at her, amazed. “I don’t know. I never asked. She just needed it.” She slid back down into the bed and rolled away from Samantha, facing the wall.

“Kat, you have to make yourself get up and get going.”

She pulled a pillow over her head. In a muffled voice she said, “The doctor said to rest.”

“The miscarriage caused a mild depression; you’re going to have to plow your way through it.”

“Then give me time to do it,” Kathleen said. You think I want to be like this? Being depressed feels terrible!

Samantha sighed and swung her legs over the side of the bed, getting ready to leave.

“Sam?” Kathleen asked, pulling the pillow away from her face. “Remember when you asked me if I thought God existed?”

“I remember.”

“If God is out there, why does He let stuff like this happen? Why can’t God act…like God?”
